OUR Ayurveda Perspective on Liver Treatment & HealingLiver Cirrhosis, Liver Failure & Other Liver Diseases
In Ayurveda, the liver is known as Yakrit and is regarded as an important organ associated with Agni (metabolism), Raktadhatu (blood), and the transformation and nourishment of body tissues. The Ayurvedic understanding of liver disorders is based on the balance of Doshas, Agni, Dhatus and Srotas, and therefore differs from the modern allopathic classification of conditions such as liver cirrhosis and liver failure. While modern medicine describes liver disease primarily through structural, biochemical and functional changes, Ayurveda evaluates the individual’s overall Dosha imbalance, digestive and metabolic function, and systemic effects of the disease.
Ayurvedic texts also describe disorders corresponding to jaundice (Kamala). In certain presentations, Shakhashrita Kamala and the concept of Ruddhapatha Kamala describe a disturbance in the normal movement of Pitta associated with obstruction or impairment of its pathway, with aggravated Kapha and Vata playing a role in the pathogenesis. These classical descriptions provide an Ayurvedic framework for understanding manifestations such as yellowish discoloration of the skin and eyes, altered digestion and other systemic symptoms, which in modern medicine may be evaluated as jaundice and investigated for their underlying hepatic or biliary causes.
Similarly, manifestations seen in chronic or advanced liver disease may be clinically correlated with Ayurvedic concepts such as Yakrit Vikara and Jalodara, the latter referring to abdominal fluid accumulation. Thus, terms such as liver cirrhosis, liver failure, jaundice and ascites belong to modern clinical terminology, while Ayurveda interprets their presentations through its own concepts of Yakrit Vikara, Kamala, Dosha imbalance, Agni, Srotas and Jalodara. Experienced Ayurvedic physicians assess the individual constitution, disease stage, symptoms and associated imbalances before developing an individualized treatment approach aimed at supporting digestion and metabolism, addressing Dosha and Srotas disturbances, managing associated symptoms and promoting overall wellbeing. In advanced liver disease, Ayurvedic care should be undertaken with qualified physicians alongside appropriate modern medical evaluation and monitoring.
